Where to stay near the pyramids at a glance

Most visitors choose between three bases: Giza, close to the plateau and the Grand Egyptian Museum, Downtown Cairo around Tahrir Square, and Zamalek, a historic district with art, cafés and galleries. Giza saves time on pyramid days. Downtown and Zamalek put you nearer the rest of the city.

One thing changed the map in April 2025: the plateau's main entrance moved to the Fayoum road, south of the pyramids. A hotel near the old gate is not automatically next to the entrance today, so ask how guests reach the plateau now. See getting to the pyramids for the routes.

If you stay in the city and still want an easy pyramid day, Giza pyramids tours take care of the ride. Check the pickup point of each tour against your hotel.

For most first-time visitors who mainly want the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, Giza is the better base. If you plan several days in Cairo, Downtown or Zamalek makes more sense, with a tour or ride-hailing app for the plateau day.

Staying in Giza

The Marriott Mena House, Cairo is at 6 Pyramids Road in Giza. Its room page lists categories with pyramid views alongside other categories, so not every room has the view. Its closeness to the former gate does not mean a usable main entrance today.

The Steigenberger Pyramids Cairo sits opposite the Grand Egyptian Museum, about 3 km from the pyramids and the Sphinx. Room categories range from city and pool view to side-pyramid, pyramid and museum view. It has an outdoor pool, a restaurant and accessible rooms. It is 25 km from Sphinx airport (SPX) and 53 km from Cairo International (CAI).

The Grand Egyptian Museum is about 2 km from the plateau. See the Grand Egyptian Museum page for hours and tickets.

Nazlet el-Samman, Downtown and Zamalek

Nazlet el-Samman

The neighbourhood on the Sphinx side of the plateau has places to stay with rooftop views. The location guarantees neither a working entrance nor a room view, and it does not mean you can watch the paid show from the roof. Ask whether a rooftop is open to guests who do not eat or drink there.

Downtown Cairo

The city centre around Tahrir Square, where the Egyptian Museum stands. A good base for the museum and other central sights. The Grand Egyptian Museum is a different museum, near the pyramids.

Zamalek

A historic district with an art, café and gallery scene. Choose it if you want a city stay with a more relaxed feel. Plan the pyramid day by tour, app or taxi.

What to check before you book

  • View category: a pyramid-view room is a specific category, not the whole hotel.
  • Route to the entrance: ask how guests reach the plateau now that the entrance is on the Fayoum road.
  • Total price: compare the full price with taxes and service charges, and the cancellation terms. Rates change by season and room category.
  • Season: in summer, an early start matters more than the view. See the best time to visit.
